NY Governor Says Congestion Pricing Will Happen Despite NJ Governor's Resistance

Daily News (New York) reports, New York Governor Kathy Hocul this week expressed little concern over New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s attacks on MTA congestion pricing, commenting, “[W]e’re going to move forward [with tolling].” She also announced that New York intends to pay its full share of Hudson River rail tunnel construction costs that, according to a recent estimate by the Gateway Development Commission, have increased by $2 billion. “The increase means New York taxpayers will cough up an extra $500 million for the project, not counting financing costs,” despite the fact that it primarily benefits residents of New Jersey, another Gateway Program partner. The Daily News notes that Hochul’s commitment contrasts with Murphy’s lobbying against the MTA program that aims to reduce congestion and improve transit service for the benefit of city residents and commuters alike.

The New York Times covered the commission’s announcement that the tunnel project will cost more and take longer to build than previously estimated.

Growth In PA Turnpike Volume Reflects Trends Observed By AAA

WHTM reports, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission reports that traffic volume has increased over the past year by two percent, a statistic that wouldn’t surprise AAA. The association says Americans have a pent-up desire to travel that’s reflected in the pre-pandemic levels of driving and flying seen over the recent Labor Day holiday. AAA also notes that more people are choosing to drive rather than fly, a trend it expects to continue as gasoline prices continue to drop.
