Spanish News Today reports, the Spanish government is determined to impose tolls on all 12,000 kilometers (7,460 miles) of motorways and other high-capacity highways by 2024. The charges are needed to cover maintenance and operating costs, and to meet conditions imposed by the EU in connection with Spain’s receipt of pandemic recovery grants. An additional purpose of tolling, says a government spokesperson, is “to contribute to the development of a much more sustainable future, by regulating private vehicles in order to encourage the use of other forms of transport.” Although the government hasn’t released detailed plans, it reportedly intends to create toll exemptions for students, commuters and persons traveling for medical treatment.
