Florida DOT Schedules Hearings On Broward County Turnpike Widening Proposal

TAPinto.net (Coconut Creek, FL) reports, Florida DOT has scheduled in-person and virtual public hearings this month on its Project Development and Environment Study of a proposal to widen a segment of turnpike mainline (SR 91) in Broward County from six to ten lanes. The purpose of the hearings is to give interested people an opportunity to review the study and comment on the project’s location, design, and social and environmental impacts. The article notes that the project’s current scope concerns the City of Coconut Creek and some of its residents who maintain the expansion would encroach on houses in several neighborhoods. The city has retained a prominent Fort Lauderdale law firm “known for political connections” to represent it in a challenge to the FDOT plan, and it will bus residents to the September 21 in-person hearing session in Fort Lauderdale. (A virtual session — accessible in telephone and online formats — will take place on September 20. Registration is online.)

Completion Of Gordie Howe Bridge Towers Signifies Overall Construction Progress

WXYZ reports, “The final steps in the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge towers are underway as the new international crossing begins to take shape. According to officials, the last concrete pour for the sloped architectural heads at the top of the pylon head is now complete and the U.S. tower has reached its full height of 722 feet.” This month, workers will begin the final stages of work on the Canadian tower (which should be completed within weeks). The article includes a summary of the progress made so far this year on other parts of the bridge structure. WXYZ notes, “The Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority and Bridging North America are working as a team to open [the bridge] by the end of 2024, but there have been some hiccups and delays from COVID-19 to supply chain issues. But the upside is high with the two-fold community benefits plan.” (TRN inserted a link in quoted text.)

The Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority issued a news release about the construction progress and the engineering significance of the towers.

New Hampshire EV Registration Surcharge Takes Effect

Starting today, owners of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in New Hampshire will pay a surcharge on their annual registration, WMUR reports. Collections from the $100 and $50 fees, respectively, will be appropriated for roadway infrastructure. A clean energy advocate interviewed for the brief article contends that some of that money should support development of the state’s EV charging infrastructure.
