New Hampshire Shelves Bridge Project On Receiving One Bid At Twice The Cost Estimate
Foster’s Daily Democrat reports, “Plans to remove and replace the old General Sullivan Bridge with a new bridge for bicyclists and pedestrians has hit a major snag, as the lone bid to construct it was almost double the state’s estimate. The New Hampshire Department of Transportation has opted not to award an $82.2 million bid to Reed & Reed of Woolwich, Maine[,] to remove the bridge superstructure and replace it with a bicyclist and pedestrian connection, according to [NHDOT] spokesperson Richard Arcand. The department’s estimate at the time of the bid was just under $45.6 million.” Arcand added that the project will undergo reevaluation and future rebidding. NHDOT received no response to an August invitation to bid on removing and reusing the old span.
Seacoastonline.com reported in June that New Hampshire won a $20 million federal RAISE program grant to help fund the replacement project. The estimated cost of construction was reported at that time as $35.6 million. The state intended to cover its share of the expense with turnpike toll revenue.

KRMS reports, officials of the agency that operates the Lake of the Ozarks Community Bridge in central Missouri say they expect to retire all debt and eliminate toll collection earlier than once anticipated. Their target date had been 2026, but factors including local economic recovery and the receipt of COVID-19 aid have made it possible to move the date up to spring 2024. The agency will go into dissolution after paying off bondholders and hand over maintenance responsibility to Missouri DOT. (TRN notes that a clause in the Missouri Constitution prohibits the state from reimposing a toll on the bridge users.)
