DRJTBC Urges Commuters To Avoid Scudder Falls Bridge (I-295) Travel On Friday Afternoon
The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC) announced that a “high-intensity construction cycle” is planned for this Friday afternoon and evening on the northbound approach to the busy Scudder Falls (I-295) Toll Bridge. The work, necessary to correct a road-surface bump, “will involve wet-grinding of the bump followed by a series of preparatory steps for eventual application of a level polyester-polymer concrete (PPC) wearing layer over the underlying grinded concrete bed.” Since the operation will require closure of two of the three interstate lanes heading into Pennsylvania, DRJTBC is recommending that commuters change their work schedules or choose an alternate route.

WKTN reports, AAA and Ohio officials issued a reminder to motorists that deer-related traffic crashes are a particular risk at this time of year. “Since 2017, statistics from the Ohio State Highway Patrol show there were 101,912 deer-related crashes on Ohio’s roadways,” 29 of which involved fatal injuries to motorists. Almost half the total number of crashes occurred in October, November and December.
Motorist alerts and incidents in many other states show this driving hazard is hardly unique to Ohio. WNDU reports, three people died and two others were injured in a Sunday night crash on a segment of the Indiana Toll Road in St. Joseph County. According to the preliminary police investigation, a westbound SUV struck a deer and then crossed the center median before colliding with an eastbound pickup truck.
MassLive.com reports that moose are also active in fall, and vehicle collisions involving those huge mammals are particularly dangerous. A commercial truck struck a moose on the Massachusetts Turnpike this morning. The driver was not injured, but the result might have have been different if a passenger vehicle had been involved. “A review in the Journal of [the] American College of Surgeons of more than 7,000 collisions involving moose and more than 50,000 involving deer . . . , concluded that hitting a moose can be 13 times deadlier than hitting a deer for the driver.”
