Civil Engineers Are On The Move, Taking Advantage Of Increased Salaries

“A new report from the American Society of Civil Engineers [ASCE] has found that civil engineering salaries are continuing to rise and that job satisfaction among those in the industry remains high,” Transportation Today reports. “However, the report found that employees are changing jobs for higher pay and new responsibilities.” The findings come from ASCE’s 2024 Civil Engineering Salary Report. Among other findings, it puts the median salary for civil engineers at $135,000, which represents a six-percent year-over-year increase. Holders of a professional engineer license earn considerably higher salaries, “nearly $42,000 more than those without a license or certification.” ASCE’s president comments, “Civil engineers are in high demand right now as projects to improve America’s infrastructure move from funding to design and construction.”

ASCE issued a news release about the survey results.

Greece Motorway Tolls Will Drop On October 6

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced this week that toll rate reductions will take effect at two motorways as of October 6, Ekathimerini reports. As Mitsotakis stated in August, basic Attiki Odos tolls will drop from the current EUR 2.80 (USD 3.11) to EUR 2.50 (USD 2.78).

As for the Maliakos-Kleidi section of the Aegean Motorway in Central Greece, “the total cost for going through the five toll stations is becoming 13.7 euros [USD 15.12] in 2024, down from 16.5 euros [USD 18.21] at present, while in 2025 the price will be 14.4 euros [USD 15.89], less than the 17.40 euros [USD 19.20] that a driver would otherwise pay if this reduction had not been made,” the prime minister stated.

Pennsylvania Turnpike, PennDOT Spotlight Winter Maintenance Preparations

On display at a media briefing yesterday were vehicles equipped with new green lights incorporated into their existing amber light mounts. Research has shown that the green lights increase safety by making construction and maintenance vehicles more visible. The state agencies, municipalities, and contractors working for any of them may now add flashing or revolving green lights to their vehicles under a law enacted earlier this year.

Officials reminded the public to make their own preparations for winter driving. In Pennsylvania, drivers can access www.511PA.com “to find plow-truck locations and details of when state-maintained roadways were last plowed.” The information about snow and ice clearance “is made possible by PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location technology, which uses units in the over 2,600 department-owned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing a truck’s location.”

Turnpike Commission COO Craig Shuey urged drivers to make adjustments for winter road conditions. “We have employees out there working to clear the roadway who want to get home to their families, so we ask drivers to give plenty of distance between them and the plow trucks, and don’t try to pass trucks spreading salt,” he added.

PennDOT officials also said the department is still actively seeking temporary equipment operators statewide to supplement its full-time maintenance staff during the winter season.
