RITBA Completes AET Conversion Of Newport Pell Bridge
The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority announced that the last cash toll was collected on the bridge at 11:00 PM last night. ““Despite the bad weather earlier this week, our crews were able to complete the transition and traffic is moving smoothly,” said Lori Caron Silveira, RITBA’s executive director. “We continue to ask motorists to be extra careful as they go through the toll plaza area.”

WJAR reports, Donald Richardson collected his last toll last night when the Newport Pell Bridge transitioned to AET. He also ended his career at RITBA, which started in 1969 when he was hired as a mechanic. The soon-to-be 93-year-old won’t be idle, however. “I have a lot of things to do in my life. I want to do some traveling and plenty of things to do around the house,” he told WJAR.
The Jamestown Press reports on the careers of Richardson and other veteran collectors, including Richardson’s daughter, Donna Peckham, and Barbara Cunha. The Richardson and Cunha families have connections with the ferry service that the bridge replaced in the 1960s.
