Public Vetting Of PennDOT Bridge Tolling Proposals Continues

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is hosting virtual and in-person events over the next several weeks to inform the public and gather comment about three of its Major Bridge P3 Program candidate projects: the I-83 John Harris Memorial (South) Bridge, the I-78 Lenhartsville Bridge, and I-80 Canoe Creek bridges. PennDOT will be scheduling both online and in-person events for other bridge projects in November.

CBS News Pittsburgh reports, the sponsor of an online petition opposed to PennDOT tolling of the  I-79 interchange and bridges project claims area residents can’t afford to pay for use of the highway segment and PennDOT targeted the project “because they knew they could make a lot of money off of it.” PennDOT spokesperson Alexis Campbell explains, yet again, that the candidate bridges need expensive repairs or complete replacement and tolling is a way to pay for the work without diverting funds from other essential projects.
