Florida DOT Toll Suspension Will Largely End Tomorrow Morning
Florida DOT announced yesterday that fare collection will resume on the turnpike and several other tolled facilities at 6:00 AM tomorrow, October 15. With authorization from Governor Ron DeSantis, FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue suspended the tolling of many highways and bridges around the state as early as September 26 to support Hurricane Ian evacuation and recovery. Perdue is permitting eleven state-operated facilities, as well as Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) and Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) facilities, to restart tolling tomorrow. (They are individually listed in the FDOT announcement.) He is keeping the collection suspension in indefinite effect for three state-owned facilities — Alligator Alley (I-75), the Sunshine Skyway and the Pinellas Bayway — “[i]n order to continue to provide crucial support and hurricane recovery assistance to the hardest impacted region of Florida.”

CBS News Chicago reports, the Chicago Skyway operator says a data processing error involving 96,000 I-Pass transactions with the Illinois Tollway was behind the small overcharges some motorists recently incurred. Over the three-week period before a customer detected the problem, about $2,880 in excess fees were collected. The Skyway says a correction has been made, refunds are being processed and it is “implementing new audit checks to improve our systems in the future.” The observant customer says neither the Skyway nor the tollway authority paid attention to him until CBS intervened on his behalf.
