Oklahoma Schedules Public Meetings On US 412 Interstate Designation, Which Won't Affect Turnpike Status
Oklahoma DOT recently announced a second round of in-person, open house meetings on the next phase of the US 412 Planning and Environmental Linkages Study. The evening events — on Tuesday, October 17, in Tulsa, and Wednesday, October 18, in Pryor — will focus on the bistate (Oklahoma and Arkansas) study of a plan to upgrade a 190-mile corridor of US 412 to interstate status.
Sand Springs Leader reports on the origin of the plan, which is endorsed by federal legislation, and local expectations that the highway’s improvement will produce economic benefits. The article quotes an ODOT spokesperson as saying the most challenging part of the project would relate to the segment between the state’s Will Rogers and Cherokee Turnpikes, because of the number of at-grade crossings. It’s also noted that neither the Cimarron nor the Cherokee Turnpikes “would become free roads because of any interstate designation.”

El Paso Times reports, El Paso’s Bridge of the Americas port of entry has reopened to commercial traffic after US Customs and Border Protection (CPB) lifted a restriction imposed on September 18. The agency said its action was necessary to make more officers available to assist with migrant processing. Commercial haulers welcomed the news, but they say tolled truck traffic between El Paso and Juárez, Mexico, is still considerably slower than normal on account of two circumstances. First, migrant processing demands mean CPB won’t be able to staff normal cargo processing operations immediately. Additionally, and of greater impact, are the enhanced “safety inspections” being conducted at nearby ports by Texas Department of Public Safety officers. Trade associations and local officials are complaining about the economic impact of the processing slowdowns.

South China Morning Post reports, Hong Kong’s transport department announced yesterday that starting December 10, “tolls at the city’s three harbour crossings would vary depending on the time of day as part of the government’s move to streamline tunnel traffic during peak hours. The time-adjusted tolls will serve as the second stage of revamped fees at the three crossings after the government narrowed their charge difference from August 2 in a bid to address long-standing traffic congestion issues. ‘Following the resumption of normality, overall cross-harbour traffic has resumed to the pre-pandemic level, and there may be a growing trend of the traffic volume with further resumption of social and economic activities,’ a department spokesman said.” Officials project that volume will drop by five percent overall — and to a higher degree where private cars and motorcycles are concerned — after the rate changes take effect. In this article, and previous reporting, the newspaper has examined the government’s “6-3-3” plan for alleviating congestion and balancing traffic flow at the region’s primary cross-harbor tunnels.
