Utah DOT Releases Thousands Of Public Comments On Little Cottonwood EIS
Yesterday, Utah DOT made public the comments it received on the Little Cottonwood Canyon project’s final EIS process. The department said a comprehensive review of the feedback is in progress but hasn’t been completed. The EIS, released two months ago, made construction of a gondola system the centerpiece of a preferred alternative for alleviating traffic congestion in the popular recreational area outside Salt Lake City. However, it also proposed intermediate solutions, including augmented bus service and implementation of “tolling or restrictions on single occupancy vehicles, and the construction of mobility hubs.”
KSL reports that UDOT received 13,443 comments during the 45-day comment period.

POLITICO takes a detailed look at the political implications of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) on the eve of the nation’s midterm election. “Democrats facing voters [today] can boast of a landmark achievement [securing adoption of the IIJA]. But nearly a year after President Joe Biden signed the biggest infrastructure bill in decades, decisions about how to spend all that money are just getting underway. And his party is struggling to reap the electoral rewards.” A major focus of the article is the lack of public awareness about the the IIJA’s benefits and the reasons why that knowledge gap exists. POLITICO also delves into partisan disputes — over infrastructure policy and the federal government’s role in shaping the nation’s transportation system — unleased by the administration’s early implementation of IIJA.
