Caltrans Completes Dumbarton Bridge Repaving Project Ahead Of Schedule
CBS News Bay Area reports, some East Bay commuters were undoubtedly relieved to learn that Caltrans completed a Dumbarton Bridge repaving project ahead of schedule, making two previously scheduled (SH 84) lane closures unnecessary. The toll bridge, an important East Bay connection to San Francisco and the Peninsula, was closed in the eastbound direction from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM, Monday through Wednesday, requiring motorists to make lengthy detours. “During those nights, crews repaved the roadway from the east end of the bridge to the toll plaza, making a smoother ride for motorists, officials said.”

CNHI (via Pharos-Tribune) reports, Indiana state and local projects are starting to see their share of the federal funding provided by 2021’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). In the two years since the law’s enactment, “$4.6 billion has been announced to help pay for over 200 specific projects,” mostly transportation system upgrades but also energy conservation and environmental cleanup projects. In its look at the law’s impact, the article notes that the federal money is “critical to improving the state’s aging infrastructure, which includes over 1,100 bridges and nearly 5,500 miles of highway rated in poor condition. Since 2011, commute times have increased by 4.4% in Indiana, and each driver on average pays $638 per year in costs due to driving on roads in need of repair, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.” The state is actively seeking additional money. Governor Eric Holcomb (R) “announced in August that Indiana and Kentucky were jointly applying for $623 million from infrastructure funding to build the Interstate 69 Ohio River Crossing project between Evansville and Henderson, Kentucky. The [proposed toll bridge] is one of the final checkboxes to cross off in the quest to finish I-69 in Indiana.” (TRN inserted a link in quoted text.)

I-66 Express Mobility Partners (EMP), the Cintra-led operator of tolled express lanes outside the DC beltway, announced it was chosen by the publisher of P3 Bulletin to receive the 2023 P3 Award in the “Best Road, Bridge or Tunnel Project” category. According to EMP’s news release, the accolade, “[c]onsidered the most prestigious award in the public/private infrastructure industry,” recognizes the contributions of the development consortium (Cintra, Meridiam, and APG members), Virginia DOT, and design/build contractor FAM Construction (a Ferrovial and Allan Myers JV) in bringing the $3.7 billion, multi-modal project to fruition last year. In July, the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) also recognized 66 Express, selecting it as the winner of the 2023 national public-private partnership award in the “Innovation of the Year” category.
