AASHTO Elects 2021-2022 Officers. Dr. Shawn Wilson Will Lead The Organization.

The board of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) elected Dr. Shawn Wilson, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, as the organization’s president for 2021-2022. Wilson, AASHTO’s first African-American leader, announced that his primary emphasis area will be expanding employment opportunity within the state DOT community “by creating a culture that identifies, trains, and empowers individuals in under-represented populations covering age, gender, ethnicity, and race.” The board also elected Roger Millar, secretary of the Washington State Department of Transportation, as AASHTO vice president.

Another NY State Bridge Authority Crossing Goes Cashless

WTEN reports, the New York State Bridge Authority launched cashless tolling of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge yesterday, on schedule. The authority said tollbooth demolition will take place over the next week and urged motorists to drive cautiously while work is in progress. Next spring, NYSBA will begin a toll plaza reconfiguration project “leading to straighter travel lanes for traffic going in both directions.”

THEA Seeks Volunteer Motorists For Test Of Connected Vehicle Technology

Tampa Bay Times reports, the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) is seeking volunteers to participate in a new phase of its $21 million connected vehicle technology research project “intended to help reduce traffic crashes in the vicinity of downtown Tampa and elsewhere.” According to a news release, THEA plans “to equip approximately 300 privately owned automobiles with connected vehicle technology by late 2022. Volunteers’ automobiles will be outfitted with devices that ‘talk’ to other connected vehicles and to roadway infrastructure to help prevent crashes.” To be eligible, participants must have a Honda, Acura, Hyundai, Kia or Toyota vehicle, and regularly drive on the Selmon Expressway or in the downtown area. THEA will issue technology devices free of charge and give participants a partial toll rebate.
