TxDOT Closes Beltway 8 Segment For Four Months Of Emergency Repairs
Houston Chronicle reports, a segment of Beltway 8 in Houston (approximately 1.6-miles in length) will be closed from today through August 31 to allow TxDOT to make “emergency spot repairs.” The article notes, “Typically, Beltway 8 acts as the frontage road for the Sam Houston Tollway, but in some segments the beltway is itself the center freeway. . . . [However, the tollway] will remain open, with the closure only affecting the part that is Beltway 8, said Roxana Sibrian, spokeswoman for the Harris County Toll Road Authority.”

South China Morning Post reports, “Hong Kong marked a smooth launch to its new automatic toll system on Sunday [May 7] after earlier delays, but about 16 per cent of 25,375 vehicles that passed through the Tsing-Sha Control Area were detected without the required payment tags. A representative from the Transport Department revealed that as of 5.30pm the HKeToll system found 4,084 cars without the installations that would allow automatic payment. The Tsing Sha Highway charges a flat rate of HK$8 (US$1).” The department said some of the 4,000-plus drivers who will be receiving electronic payment notices may have obtained tags without properly setting up an account. As of May 3, officials had issued more than 680,000 tags, enough to outfit 85 percent of Hong Kong’s registered vehicles. (TRN inserted a link in quoted text.)
