New Zealand Will Toll Auckland Road Now Under Construction

The New Zealand Herald reports, New Zealand’s transport minister announced that the O Mahurangi-Penlink road in north Auckland will be electronically tolled upon its anticipated 2026 opening. Although the road’s construction costs — NZ$830 million (US$514.6 million) — were financed through a capital investment program, minister Michael Wood said toll revenue is needed to underwrite annual maintenance. The seven-kilometer (4.3-mile) road will have two toll points. The peak period toll for passenger and light vehicles will be $3.00 (US$1.86), and the off-peak rate, a dollar less. Heavy vehicles will pay double those rates, public transit operators excepted.

Stuff also reports on the planned toll system.
