West Virginia City Council OKs Toll Bridge Sale
The Parkersburg News and Sentinel reports, following a public hearing yesterday, the Parkersburg, West Virginia, City Council approved the final reading of an ordinance that authorizes the city to sell its toll bridge to United Bridge Partners (UBP). A UBP executive said he hopes the sale documents will be executed within days. “We’ll immediately begin our design and pre-construction work,” he said. “We’ll probably start the project spring of next year.” UBP is planning to rehabilitate the bridge (and install an AET system) over a period of 21 months. When the work is complete, the company will take full control of the bridge and obtain the exclusive rights to toll revenue.

BNamericas reports, in a populist move “to boost his sagging approval ratings,” Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, announced that motorcycles will be exempt from paying tolls on future highway concessions. A spokesperson later confirmed that the government is evaluating the exemption and “looking at increasing tolls for light vehicles and trucks” as a way to compensate for the reduction in revenue. ABCR, the national association of concession operators, criticized the exemption on the grounds that it would cause “a distortion in tolls” and possibly delay some planned concessions.
