WSDOT Expects Heavy Summer Traffic, Advises Drivers To Mind Their Gas Gauges

WSDOT announced that it expects an increase in Memorial Day holiday traffic this year. It advised travelers to budget extra driving time and “be sure to keep vehicles at least a quarter full of fuel throughout travel. The state Department of Commerce says there is no fuel shortage like recently seen on the East Coast, but with many people still driving rather than flying, there could be local delays in fuel deliveries during heavy travel weekends this summer.”

The "Slog" Toward A Deal On Infrastructure Continues

The Associated Press reports on the seesaw discussions that have taken place this week as the Biden administration and lawmakers attempt to reach a compromise on infrastructure funding. “Negotiations between the White House and Senate Republicans over President Joe Biden’s $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan are hitting a crucial stage ahead of talks [today] after the latest GOP offer left some dismay in the administration that there wasn’t more movement off the Republicans’ initial $568 billion proposal.” All sides are expressing optimism that a deal is still within reach, but, as AP notes, “the outward talks of progress have not translated into the two sides getting much closer to a deal. Beyond the significant gap in the two sides’ visions for the size of the package, there has been little discussion of how to reach an agreement on how to pay for it.”

POLITICO reports on a tactic the White House is using to try to move Republican lawmakers. “Over the past few weeks, senior White House officials, Cabinet members, and President Joe Biden himself have held dozens of calls or meetings with local Republican leaders to talk roads, bridges, and modern infrastructure investments. Much of the outreach has been done in private. . . . But in conversations with more than a dozen local officials familiar with the White House’s efforts . . . a few themes emerge. Chief among them is that the White House wants local GOP mayors and governors to convince their Republican representatives in Congress of the need to back the president’s proposals.”
