Washington Commission Makes SR 520 Rate Hike Proposal

KIRO FM reports, the Washington State Transportation Commission voted Wednesday to approve a scenario for adjusting the SR 520 floating bridge toll structure. After extensive public review, commissioners adopted one of the two increase formulas presented to them earlier this year.

According to a commission announcement, the adjusted toll rate that would take effect on August 15, if it is given final approval after further public review, would:

  • increase tolls by an average of 10 percent for the entire week, with variations by time of day and day of week; and
  • provide fewer rate variations throughout the week, resulting in six different prices instead of the existing eight.

KIAH reports, Houston METRO announced that service adjustments, including the complete closure of its express toll lanes, will be in effect today because of an overnight storm.

The Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) said its customer service call center and EZ TAG stores will be closed today because of the weather and power outages.

Associated Press reports that “thunderstorms with hurricane-force winds” tore through parts of metro Houston last night, causing power outages affecting a million homes and businesses that could last for weeks in some areas. Several people were killed, 2,500 traffic lights were disabled and “widespread destruction brought much of Houston to a standstill as crews raced to restore power and remove uprooted trees and debris.” City officials are asking residents who aren’t essential workers to remain home and stay off the streets.
