Virginia State Budget Includes Hampton Roads Toll Relief Funding

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) signed a $188 billion two-year state budget into law yesterday, WVEC reports. The spending plan includes $101 million for toll relief credits — $77 million the first year and $24 million the second year — for qualifying Hampton Roads drivers with less than $50,000 in annual income. (Toll relief proposals have been a topic of much negotiation and speculation in recent months.) Hampton Roads also will receive a combined $125 million for flood preparedness and coastal storm risk management.

The Virginian-Pilot (scroll down to “Toll Relief” heading”) also covers this story.

The scope of the toll credits program funded by the appropriations is described in the budget bill (HB 30) at Item 441 on PDF page 513.

Locals Expand Effort To Block DRJTBC's Proposed Washington Crossing Bridge Replacement

Bucks County Herald reports, officials in Pennsylvania’s Upper Makefield Township are considering expanding historic preservation efforts aimed at stopping the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC) from replacing the Washington Crossing Toll-Supported Bridge with a much wider, more modern facility. Local residents and officials claimed surprise when DRJTBC announced in February it was starting to prepare for a replacement project. Opponents have since hired a consultant to help get the bridge placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and they are considering expanding the scope of his work to also have several nearby buildings listed.

NHTSA Marks Police Memorial Day With "Mover Over" Laws Reminder

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) marked this year’s National Peace Officers Memorial Day, May 15, and National Police Week by reminding motorists that all 50 states now have “move over” laws, about the requirements and importance of which many people are still unaware. “Tragically,” NHTSA comments, “something that may sound as simple as a traffic stop, investigating a vehicle crash, or assisting a roadside motorist can result in a deadly scenario.”

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) commemorated police week by issuing a news release remembering the agency’s officers who died in the performance of their duties.
