New York Scofflaw And “Ghost Car” Task Force Strikes Again

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) yesterday announced the results of an eleventh operation conducted by the interagency task force created to apprehend persistent toll violators and clear New York streets of “ghost cars.” Last Wednesday, May 11, police officers from several agencies “seized 57 vehicles for a number of violations including unpaid tolls, unregistered vehicles, and suspended licenses among other traffic infractions. . . . The scofflaws had amassed nearly $302,000 in unpaid tolls and fees, judgments, and debts. The operation resulted in 19 arrests and 100 summonses issued.” It was conducted at MTA’s Cross Bay and Marine Parkway Bridges, and at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s George Washington, Goethals and Bayonne Bridges.

Waymo Touts Success Of Fully Autonomous Ridesharing Service

KTLA reports, “It’s been just one month since self-driving taxi service Waymo starting accepting paid rides in Los Angeles, but the service seems to have caught on. Between L.A., Phoenix and San Francisco, Waymo is serving more than 50,000 customers a week,” according to a company social media post.

Waymo, the autonomous driving development subsidiary of Alphabet, Inc., Google’s parent company, announced in March it was expanding its fully autonomous ride-hailing (“robotaxi”) service.
