Florida Attorney General Cracks Down On Toll-Related Smishing Spree

WPEC reports, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody (R) is escalating enforcement and public awareness efforts to fight back against a string of text message scams in which fraudulent overseas actors are impersonating US toll agencies to collect unsuspecting drivers’ personal information. The article lists 10 websites recently shut down by the state’s Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit. “Moody explained the aim of these scammers stretches beyond the diversion of toll payments. They orchestrate their schemes to collect personal information, including identity and bank details, from unsuspecting victims. Furthermore, the scam extends to the potential installation of malware on the victims’ phones.” She identified tactics often used in financial scams and encouraged people to access the SunPass website directly rather than clicking links sent to them. The article includes a short code that can be used to report suspicious text messages or telephone calls  directly to law enforcement agencies.

Work Zone Crash Kills One Thruway Worker And Critically Injures Another

Democrat and Chronicle reports, a work zone crash yesterday afternoon resulted in the death of one New York Thruway worker and the critical injury of his colleague. Both men were  working in the I-90 zone near the town of Chili when a tractor-trailer driven by a 64-year-old man struck them. New York State Police are investigating the incident, and drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors. No charges have been filed against the truck driver at this time. Eastbound lanes were partially closed for several hours but have been reopened. “We are heartbroken over this senseless death, praying for the recovery of the injured worker and grateful to first responders who sprang into action to support their fellow public servants,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D). “This incident is a tragic reminder: responsible driving is a life-saving skill, and all New Yorkers should remain alert, slow down and move over when approaching a work zone or stopped vehicle.”

This afternoon, state police identified the worker who was killed as Vincent Giammarva, 62, a Genesee County resident. His injured coworker, Mark Vara, 58, of Monroe County, is reportedly in critical condition.

Pennsylvania Will Restrict Drivers' Mobile Phone Use

Associated Press reports, “Pennsylvania will join the majority of states that ban motorists from handling a cell phone for almost any purpose while driving, as backers of the legislation hope to reduce distracted driving accidents and deaths after nearly two decades of pressing the measure. Gov. Josh Shapiro’s office said [yesterday] the Democrat will sign the bill, 18 years after he first introduced a similar bill when he served in the state House of Representatives. The ban will take effect a year after he signs it, which is expected in the coming days.” AP notes that the bill also creates a traffic stop data reporting requirement that is intended to shine a light on racial profiling within large police departments.
