Ohio Turnpike Will Begin Phasing In New Toll Collection System

The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission (OTIC) announced today that a gradual phase-in of its new toll collection system will take place “over the next several weeks.” In design and development since 2016, the system includes “a combination of open road tolling lanes for E-ZPass customers and a gated exit system for non-E-ZPass customers who prefer to pay by cash or credit card.” OTIC’s upgrade of collection technology has involved its largest construction effort since the 1955 opening of the 241-mile turnpike.

Today’s OTIC announcement includes a detailed description of the equipment and operating changes that the system makeover is introducing. Among other things:

  • E-ZPass lane entry gates will open at 20 interchanges;
  • new open-road toll lanes will be available in certain turnpike segments;
  • new electronic toll collection equipment and automated toll payment machines will be in operation at numerous points;
  • toll collection will be eliminated at some existing interchanges while flat-rate tolls will be collected at eastern and western gateways to the turnpike;
  • two new plazas, located at mileposts 49 and 211, will open and become the new ends of the ticketed toll system; and
  • some toll schedule revisions will take effect.

In short, OTIC states, “The new toll collection system and the technology behind it are a big step forward in safety, efficiency, and convenience for the Ohio Turnpike’s passenger car and commercial truck customers to reach east and west destinations along the northern corridor of Ohio and beyond.”
