Private Illinois Toll Facility Announces April 1 Toll Hike

Houbolt Road Extension JV announced yesterday it will increase its all-electronic toll system rates effective April 1. The company, a CenterPoint Properties and United Bridge Partners joint venture, operates a 1.5-mile-long road extension and a 0.4-mile-long bridge over the Des Plaines River in Joliet, Illinois. The facility opened to traffic on April 27, 2023, to provide a direct route between I-80 and the CenterPoint Intermodal Center, a major inland port.

Depending on a driver’s vehicle category and method of payment, the rate adjustment will cost an additional 15 cents to one dollar. A new rate chart is included in the company’s news release. The current and new rate charts are displayed side-by-side on the facility’s website.

Spanish Think Tank Advocates Government Adoption Of Congestion Pricing

Euro Weekly News reports, the Foundation for Applied Economic Studies (FEDEA), a think tank associated with the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE), is urging the Spanish Ministry of Transport to consider urban tolls to stem congestion and pollution in city centers, citing as examples programs implemented in London, Milan, Stockholm and Copenhagen. FEDEA criticizes current sustainable mobility law and legislation for not addressing tolling measures. “The think tank advocates for a ‘pay-per-use and the polluter pays’ principle, aiming to bridge the gap between private and societal costs.” (TRN inserted a link in quoted text.)
