PANYNJ Completes Complex Phase Of $2 Billion George Washington Bridge Rehabilitation
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) recently announced the completion of a seven-year project “to replace all 592 original suspender ropes on the George Washington Bridge, marking a major milestone in the agency’s comprehensive $2 billion rehabilitation of the world’s busiest vehicular bridge as it nears its 100th birthday.” The complex project included rehabilitation of the span’s main cables, a process that involved recoating and rewrapping of 26,474 compacted wires within each cable. Officials described the work as the centerpiece of PANYNJ’s Restoring the George program and a “remarkable feat of engineering” that required diligent planning and precision execution.

“Government Technology” reports, “Despite changes at the federal level, state leaders in California and New York have recently affirmed their commitment to climate initiatives and transitioning away from fossil fuels.” During a recent legislative committee meeting, California officials said they will not be deterred by an EPA effort to impede policy initiatives such as Advanced Clean Trucks, Advanced Clean Fleets, Advanced Clean Cars, and Clean Mobility Options. The chair of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) commented, “The law is on our side, science is on our side and the public is on our side.”
As for New York State, the Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has recently approved funding to help school districts transition to electric vehicle fleets, and it is pursuing initiatives to increase the availability of charging infrastructure. “The Empire State has also adopted policies similar to those in California, to drive the transition of fleets and trucks to zero-emission vehicles.”
