Georgia DOT Issues RFI Seeking Feedback On I-285 Express Project Delivery
Georgia DOT this afternoon released a Request for Information (RFI) for the I-285 Express Lanes project. An accompanying news release states, “This RFI is directed to private-sector entities that may be interested in providing feedback on the procurement approach for the design, construction, financing, tolling, operation, maintenance, and handback of the proposed I-285 East Express Lanes project, which includes approximately 30 miles of new express lanes in both directions along I-285 from Northside Drive to I-20 (east) and along a portion of SR 400. The northern segment of I-285 is one of the most heavily traveled and congested interstate highways in America. The I-285 Express Lanes aim to improve regional mobility, provide more reliable trip times, and offer a mobility choice to motorists and transit providers traveling through the metro-Atlanta region and will expand the existing Georgia Express Lanes network.” The deadline for submitting responses is April 12, 2024.
Interested contractors, developers and investors can view a webinar on the planned express lanes delivery approach and the RFI process. Additional information on the procurement and project documents are available at I-285 Express Lanes Data Room. (Registration required for document access.)

On Tuesday, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC) announced “it has awarded a $23.5 million construction contract to rehabilitate the agency’s New Jersey I-78 highway segment that extends between the I-78 Toll Bridge and the Phillipsburg/Alpha interchange (Exit 3, Routes 22/173/122).” Crisdel Group, based in South Plainfield, NJ, submitted the winning bid. The segment was last rehabilitated in 2007 and 2009, and this round of work on the roadway, which presents geological challenges, is designed to last 15 years. Construction activity will get underway in April and wrap up by the end of the year. Plans are to keep at least two lanes in each direction open for daytime travel, and single lanes in each direction overnight. The I-78 Toll Bridge, which opened in 1989, is the busiest of the 18 vehicular bridges the commission manages.

As the expected July launch of its cashless tolling system approaches, the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) is using various means to prepare its customers and promote additional K-TAG account registrations. This week, as reported by KSNW, it co-hosted a coffee with a local chamber of commerce and extended an open invitation to attend. Also, authority CEO Steve Hewitt appeared on KVOE radio’s “Morning Show” to discuss the transition and the advantages of opening a transponder account. (To listen to the entire segment, go here and click on the “Audio – Thursday – 02-29-24” link.) The authority’s outreach supplements the website, social media and streaming video resources it’s made available for months to ensure that Kansans understand why KTA is transitioning to AET, how the system will work and what benefits motorists should expect.
