A Railing Retrofit Causes The Golden Gate Bridge to "Sing" In High Winds

SFGATE and KQED report, engineers prescribed new railing slats for the Golden Gate Bridge’s western side to help the structure withstand high winds. However, when wind conditions are right, the slats produce what listeners — depending on their musical tastes — describe as a hum, a song or an “eerie sound.” KQED thinks the retrofit has turned San Francisco’s signature landmark into “a giant orange wheezing kazoo.”
