The Philadelphia Inquirer reports, a considerable segment of the Garden State Parkway was closed for several hours last Friday because smoke from a nearby 5,900-acre wildfire obscured visibility. According to New Jersey Turnpike Authority Twitter posts, the closure — between exits 38 and 63 — lasted from about 5:30 AM until it was fully lifted around 10:00 AM.
Gothamist reports, “Officials said conditions brought by climate change had led to a noticeable spike in forest fires in New Jersey. Commenting on recent climate data, New Jersey Forest Fire Service Chief Greg McLaughlin said, “We’re seeing the fire season window of mid-March to mid-May start in February or early March and here we are, into June.” In a typical year, New Jersey will have three or four major wildfires, but there have been nine so far in 2023.
