SRTA Avoids Deviations From Express Lanes Operating Schedules

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s “Gridlock Guy” column responds to readers who want to know why the State Road and Tollway Authority doesn’t use reversible toll lanes to relieve sporadic traffic congestion on I-75 south and northwest of Atlanta. SRTA tells the newspaper it’s reluctant to deviate from normal operating schedules designed around weekday peak period flows because of research showing that “regular users of the lanes bank on a routine.” Moreover, the seasonal increase in freight hauling and vacation travel means area traffic patterns are particularly unpredictable right now. In the time it takes to reverse the flow of traffic on an express lane, a slowdown may clear on its own or actually shift to the opposite side of the interstate.
