Florida DOT Receives "Historic" Infusion Of Capital Funding

Florida DOT noted in a news release that the FY 2023-2024 state budget recently approved by Governor Ron DeSantis (R) includes a “historic investment” of $14.8 billion in the department that will make possible “essential projects to bolster the state’s transportation network, address congestion, enhance safety, ensure resiliency, and facilitate trade.” Projects in FDOT’s Five-Year Work Program will receive a total of $13.9 billion in funding. In addition to the budget allocations, the legislature and the governor approved dedicating $4 billion of general revenue surplus to the “Moving Florida Forward” initiative, which prioritizes highway projects that immediately address  mobility, safety and resiliency issues. Among other things, the FDOT funding boosts will provide “$5.5 billion for highway construction to include 118 new lane miles,” “$1.6 billion in resurfacing to include 2,632 lane miles,” and “$726.6 million for repairs of 65 bridges and replacement of 19 bridges.”

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Customers Await Completion Of Rate Increase Analysis

NOLA.com reports, “A toll increase for crossing the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is almost a certainty, but the top official at the agency that runs the 24-mile-long bridge says the exact amount is still unknown. Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said officials should know more in the coming weeks after an analysis of the bridge’s financial picture is completed. Until then, the approximately 19,000 drivers who cross the span each weekday will have to wait.” The article notes that the forthcoming increase sparked much negative social media comment when it was first mentioned in April, but “things have quieted some since then,” according to Dufrechou. Bond agreement terms, and inflation in insurance, fuel and labor costs, are the factors driving the  causeway commission’s consideration of a rate change.
