Ohio River Toll Bridge Renamed During July 4 Ceremony
WTOV reports, the Newell Bridge, a steel suspension bridge linking East Liverpool, Ohio, and Newell, West Virginia, got a new name –the Wayne Six Toll Bridge — during a July 4 rededication ceremony. Wayne Six is the man who has been in charge of maintaining the historic steel suspension bridge for 56 years and counting. The owner of the privately held span said the name change is intended to honor Six for the dedication and work that has sustained the circa 1905 structure in good condition. “Tuesdays dedication ceremony included a rendering of a plaque that will be placed on the bridge. It will be along with some other updates to modernize the bridge in the coming years,” including installation of an electronic collection system. The bridge originally carried trolley traffic between a pottery manufacturer’s Ohio facilities and a company town it built on the West Virginia side of the Ohio River.

Last week, “crews took down the last toll collection booth on the Dulles Toll Road, as the road switches to pay-by-plate or E-ZPass only,” LoudounNow reports. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) in February announced the move to a cashless system, and has now completed the removal of 26 toll booths. Dulles Toll Road rates increased at the start of 2023, and additional increases are expected every five years until MWAA finishes paying off its debt from building the Silver Line extension to Loudon in 2058.
