Auto Giants Will Collaborate To Build Massive North America EV Charging Network
NPR reports, “Seven of the world’s largest carmakers are launching a new electric vehicle charging network, in an unusual display of cooperation that’s designed to address one of the major deterrents for would-be electric vehicle purchasers.” The collaboration’s scale reportedly is unprecedented, and its goal lofty: 30,000 fast charging stations in North America, powered solely by renewable energy. A similar European joint venture, Ionity, has only managed to build 2,600 chargers since 2017. Current data on Electrify America and Tesla efforts to expand the US charging network suggest the automakers have “a very high mountain to climb” to reach their goal. NPR notes that the newly announced network, “which has not yet been named, is a partnership between BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis (formerly known as Fiat Chrysler).”
The companies issued a joint press release on their collaboration.

Transport Topics reports, the Marcelino Serna Port of Entry (formerly Tornillo-Guadalupe border crossing) will re-open to commercial traffic on August 7. Commercial crossing hours will be limited to start but may be expanded to accommodate demand. Commercial trucking at the land port, just east of El Paso, was halted in 2017 due to limited demand — although passenger and pedestrian traffic has remained active. The commercial traffic tide has turned with the newly created Samalayuca toll road, which “opened a new highway in Mexico for cars and trucks traveling from the northern Chihuahua state directly to the border at Marcelino Serna.” That toll road allows traffic to avoid the very crowded border crossings between El Paso and Ciudad Juárez.
