Otay Mesa Development Advances With Opening Of New Highway Connector
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports, a connector between southbound SR 125 and westbound SR 905 — a key part of the Otay Mesa East (Otay II) port of entry project — is finished and will open to traffic next week. Federal, state, regional and Mexican government officials who attended a ribbon-cutting event yesterday said the new $28.9 million roadway will immediately improve the movement of traffic and cargo throughout the border region, but it’s also significant as a major milestone in the larger Otay II project. Preparation for construction of the US-side port facility and its SR 11 tolled entryway gets started next month.

WKMG reports, Florida DOT still has police stationed at all direct-connect exits along the I-4 express lanes corridor to prevent wrong-way driving incidents, and the cost of that added security has risen to more than $800,000. The department, which started the practice in February, now describes it as a “common” method of creating a “visual aid for motorists” and obtaining law enforcement input on how motorists are adapting to new infrastructure. WKMG notes that it first observed the police presence after some wrong-way driving incidents occurred on the newly opened express lanes. Florida DOT started to install sophisticated wrong-way driving detection and deterrence equipment along the corridor in late March, expediting work that it had originally deferred until at least 2023.

Transport Topics reports, “Legislation that would fund federal transportation programs in fiscal 2023 was recently approved in the U.S. House of Representatives” on a largely partisan vote. Members of the chamber on July 20 passed the legislation, which would back safety initiatives, infrastructure grants and operational expenses throughout the U.S. Department of Transportation. Specifically, the bill would dedicate $90.9 billion for the upcoming fiscal year, an increase of $9.9 billion above the enacted level.” The article includes a high-level overview of the spending package and notes that the Senate is not yet scheduled to vote on companion legislation.
