Central Florida’s Polk Parkway Widening Continues On Pace
ConstructionEquipmentGuide.com reports, Florida DOT’s Polk Parkway Widening project is progressing toward its anticipated completion date in mid-2024. The $61 million project, started in 2021, is contracted to Ranger Construction Industries and overseen by Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise. Polk County, in central Florida, is the state’s fastest growing county, and FDOT projects the parkway will serve 32,000 commuters per day by 2033. The highway opened in 1998 and transitioned to electronic tolling last year. The widening project will expand it to four lanes in each direction for the entire 24-mile length. New interchanges and road alignments are also within the scope of work. An FDOT spokesperson said weather so far has not caused delays, but nationwide supply chain issues and workforce shortages have been the project’s biggest challenges.

“Mass Transit” Magazine reports, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has committed to implementing all recommendations from its Blue Ribbon Panel on Fare and Toll Evasion, released in May. The panel estimated that about $690 million worth of transit fares and tolls go unpaid every year. “To limit toll evaders, MTA is working on reciprocity agreements with other states to allow non-New York drivers caught evading tolls to be penalized in their home state.” MTA said it will deploy more portable license plate readers, and it is working on legislation to give more teeth to toll collection enforcement. A variety of measures to tighten collection of transit fares also is planned, much of it relying on education campaigns and expanding the use of discounted fare programs for low-income riders.
