House GOP Aims To Cut Infrastructure Funding Approved In Recent Bipartisan Bills
The Washington Post reports, “It took decades for Congress to deliver on its promise to pour new money into the nation’s roads, bridges, pipes, ports and internet connections. Now, House Republicans are trying to slash some of the same funds. A series of GOP bills to finance the federal government in 2024 would wipe out billions of dollars meant to repair the nation’s aging infrastructure, potentially undercutting a 2021 law [IIJA] that was one of Washington’s rare recent bipartisan achievements. The proposed cuts could hamstring some of the most urgently needed public-works projects across the country, from improving rail safety to reducing lead contamination at schools.” Republicans claim they are taking responsible action to deal with the national government debt by cutting the operating budgets of federal agencies and “technically leaving intact the extra funding that lawmakers adopted in the [IIJA]. But the effect would be the same: The GOP bills would reduce the federal money available for repairs.” Although most Democrats strongly oppose cuts, a contest over agency budgets has so far taken place mostly outside public view. However, an “acrimonious debate” looms as Republican leadership begins moving FY 2024 appropriations bills out of committee and onto the floor.

The Philippine Star marks the seventy-seventh birthday of Philippine magnate Manny V. Pangilinan by interviewing business associates about their experiences working with him and the reasons for his success. A common theme of their comments is that a “high sense of purpose” and a dedication to improving the lives of Filipinos characterizes both the business and personal activities of MVP, as he is commonly known. Leadership of First Pacific Investment Company Limited and Metro Pacific Investments Corporation has put Pangilinan at the forefront of Philippine private-sector infrastructure development, from utilities and toll highways to hospitals, banks and media.

WTAJ reports, “A large chunk of the Pennsylvania Turnpike will be closed overnight this weekend for a tractor-trailer crash cleanup.” The turnpike commission announced that 86 miles of westbound, mainline lanes will shut down (weather permitting) between 11:00 PM Saturday and 5:00 AM Sunday so crews can “safely remove a tractor-trailer that crashed Monday evening . . . in Somerset County. Pennsylvania State Police said the tractor-trailer left the roadway, went through a guardrail and traveled down a ditch before striking an embankment. The crash caused disabling damage to the vehicle and the driver was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.” Westbound drivers will be rerouted between the Breezewood (Exit 161) and New Stanton (Exit 75) interchanges. Although the corridor’s eastbound lanes will remain open overnight, road work unrelated to the truck crash will require some lane restrictions.
