Port Of Hood River Releases After Action Report On Costly Bridge Strike

“Port of Hood River Executive Director Kevin Greenwood released an After Action Report (AAR) summarizing the June 27 incident where a truck collided with truss spans on the Hood River-White Salmon Bridge and caused an estimated $1.1 million in damages,” Columbia Gorge News reports. A three-day closure following the incident also cost the port authority about $135,000 in lost tolls. In addition to causation, the article details actions taken from when the strike occurred to when the last car exited the bridge. Greenwood has recommended additional incident response training for port management and a revised Emergency Action Plan. The port’s current plan reportedly does not address bridge strikes. The commission also may reconsider its decision earlier this year to save $65,000 in insurance premiums by raising its deductible to $1 million. A copy of the AAR is attached to the July 16 port commission meeting agenda packet (original version) starting at PDF page 39.

USDOT Outlines Transportation Emission Reduction Strategies In Report To Congress

“To meet U.S. greenhouse gas emissions targets under the Paris Agreement, the Transportation Department says the U.S. must reduce transportation emissions to near zero,” Smart Cities Dive reports. That imperative is detailed in a 44-page USDOT report to Congress on decarbonization released July 12. “The DOT outlined three decarbonization strategies: reducing the distance traveled for people and freight; increasing options for more energy-efficient travel modes and transitioning transportation to zero-emission vehicles and fuels.” The strategies are drawn from the Biden administration’s 2023 National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization. According to USDOT, light-duty vehicles, trucks and buses account for 70 percent of the nation’s transportation emissions, which in turn comprise one-third of US greenhouse gas emissions.

Suicides And Attempts Decline Following Golden Gate Bridge Safety Net Installation

Family members of those lost to suicide at the Golden Gate Bridge joined elected officials and others Monday to commemorate the completion of a safety barrier nearly 20 years in the making, The Guardian reports. The Bridge Rail Foundation had been advocating for a net to be installed on the span since 2006. According to the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, three suicides have occurred at the bridge since the net was finished on January 1 — compared to 15 to 20 suicides by this time in an average year. Interventions likewise have dropped, from between 150 and 200 to 56 successful interventions so far this year. Despite the barrier’s installation, security staffing is maintained at previous levels. The article includes comments from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA 11) — she helped secure funding for the $224 million barrier — the former Marin county coroner, and the parents of an 18-year-old man who jumped to his death in 2013.
