It's Full Steam Ahead On The Pennsylvania Turnpike's Southern Beltway Project
ConstructionEquipmentGuide.com reports, after a spring slowdown caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, Pennsylvania highway construction is back on track this summer. According to the article, “The marquee road construction project in the southwest region of the state is the ongoing work on the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Southern Beltway. Once completed, the Southern Beltway will link Pittsburgh International Airport to Interstate 79. . . .” The project was scheduled for completion in Fall 2021, but the COVID-19 interruption has officials reevaluating that deadline. The Boston Globe reports on criticism of MassDOT’s latest multimodal proposal to rehabilitate a part of Boston’s Allston neighborhood split by an elevated segment of turnpike. “At its heart,” the article states, MassDOT’s dilemma “appears to be one of geometry: How do you squeeze an eight-lane highway, a four-lane parkway, bike and walking paths, and four railroad tracks into a narrow strip of land without spilling into the Charles River?” Complaints include the department’s concept is too “car-centric.”
