India’s Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari says FASTag to date has saved drivers 70,000 crore rupees (about US$8.4 billion) worth of fuel by eliminating many toll booth lines, the Rest of World news website reports. India is still rolling out its electronic tolling initiative, but FASTag adoption became mandatory for vehicles in 2021. Toll collections have increased “from $770 million in 2013–14 to nearly $5 billion in 2022–2023.” By 2030, the government wants that total to reach $15 billion. In addition to highway toll payment, FASTag is increasingly being used at parking lots and even for entry to an expansive tiger preserve. It has also been suggested the technology could be used to automatically levy speeding fines.
