Newspaper Helps Kansas Turnpike Authority Prepare Drivers For July AET Transition

The Kansas City Star reports on the Kansas Turnpike Authority’s announcement that its transition to all-electronic tolling will occur in July. It notes, “There will be 21 overhead toll gantries placed between the current toll plazas along the 236-mile turnpike through Interstate 70 in Kansas City, Interstate 470 in Topeka, Interstate 335 in Emporia and Interstate 35 to Oklahoma.” The article provides collection system and K-TAG fundamentals and describes the infrastructure changes the conversion will bring. It also explains how tolls will be calculated in accordance with a new per-mile rate structure that will take effect with the conversion.

Last weekend, the authority added an “On the Road” video to its YouTube channel in which CEO Steve Hewitt and colleagues discuss the customer service innovations that will accompany the transition to AET. The feature notes that customer feedback, both positive and negative, informed the agency’s AET development process. (As of today, the video has almost 8,000 views.)

Violations Decline After Colorado Installs Express Lane Rule Enforcement Technology

Colorado DOT’s camera-based program for enforcing express lane rules is only deployed on a few corridors but it’s already yielded nearly $4 million in fines from more than 160,000 citations, KMGH reports. The department said its Express Lanes Safety Enforcement Program, which charges $75 per incident or $150 if the fine isn’t paid within 20 days, is proving effective: Violations are down 60 percent since the program’s initial launch at the end of September on parts of I-25 and C-470. Enforcement will come to the I-25 South Gap facility at some point this year and ultimately extend to all express lanes. “[W]e want to make sure that we have plenty of practice at it before we try to simultaneously launch tolling and launch safety enforcement,” said CDOT’s Deputy Director of Communications, Tim Hoover. BLISSWAY installed the program’s cameras, sensors and AI-assisted software. CDOT is authorized to enforce anti-weaving rules but not speed restrictions. That said, the two often go hand-in-hand. Hoover emphasized that the agency would rather people drive safely than generate CDOT revenue in the form of fines, so collections likely will be reinvested into safety programs.
