FHWA Sends $729 Million To States To Repair Disaster And Extreme Weather Damage

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced yesterday that 34 states, the District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico have been awarded a combined $729 million through the agency’s Emergency Relief (ER) Program to fund repair or reconstruction of highways and bridges damaged by natural disasters, extreme weather related to the unfolding climate crisis, or catastrophic failures. FHWA Administrator Shailen Bhatt commented that “[c]limate change is devastating communities across the U.S.” and “[o]ur transportation system was not designed to handle the climate impacts we are seeing in the 21st Century.” He noted that ER has distributed more than $1.3 billion since the start of 2022. The federal funding supports rehabilitation projects that also “protect the travelling public from further damages and allow for resiliency improvements as damages are repaired.” FHWA’s announcement includes a table that lists the states’ and territories’ qualifying events and their respective allocations. The agency has also has published a listing of all FY 2024 Emergency Relief Program allocations. Yesterday’s announcement cites the Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-saving Transportation (PROTECT) program as a related source of federal aid.

Police Break Up 199-MPH Car Race On Florida's Turnpike Near Orlando

Miami Herald reports, “A 20-year-old driver clocked at 199 mph in a 70-mph zone was in his dad’s red Camaro at the time, and he had a camera set up in back to record Instagram videos, according to Florida investigators. The driver and a passenger were arrested when deputies observed the Camaro participating in an illegal street race on the Florida Turnpike near Orlando, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported.” Deputies didn’t provide information about the other vehicle involved in the race.

Orlando Sentinel (via Tampa Bay Times) reports, the deputies who arrested the driver and passenger early Sunday morning are assigned to a detail that combats illegal racing. “Last year, deputies made 157 arrests, issued 1,290 citations and seized 54 vehicles in relation to street racing crimes, according to the sheriff’s office.”
