FHWA Awards $230 Million In Emergency Relief To States And Territories
USDOT announced the grants last Friday to help 26 states, Guam, and Puerto Rico repair and rebuild roads and bridges following natural disasters and catastrophic weather events. Outgoing USDOT secretary, Pete Buttigieg, noted in the announcement, “As communities recover from the impacts of increasingly extreme weather, they have [Biden administration] support in the process of restoring and rebuilding their transportation infrastructure.”

Virginia State Delegate Candi Mundon King (D-23) has re-introduced a tolling bill that never made it past a House subcommittee last year, WRIC reports. HB 2368 would put a $200 monthly limit on any resident’s toll costs for travel on roads, bridges, tunnels, and ferries throughout the state. It also would exempt recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) from paying all tolls.

With a major weather system bearing down on the Houston area, the Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority announced in advance that it would close both the Westpark Tollway and Fort Bend Parkway after Monday evening’s rush hour, KPRC reports. The authority also closed some Houston Grand Parkway overpasses. The facilities will reopen as weather conditions permit.
To keep the public informed about icy road conditions, KHOU is publishing Houston TranStar’s real-time list of incidents and road closures, as well as an interactive map of “trouble spots.”

The Star reports, Section 2 of the West Coast Expressway (WCE) connecting the South Klang Valley and Shah Alam expressways was scheduled to open at midnight, local time, “taking Port Klang a step closer to becoming the largest logistics hub in South-East Asia.” The 7.2-kilometer (4.5-mile) connector will be free to travel for its first month of operation.
Malaysia’s Works Minister, Alexander Nanta Linggi, told reporters covering the opening, “This [new facility] will directly attract investments to industrial areas and ports, besides creating job opportunities and being an economic catalyst.”
