Another in a series of detailed reports on the US truck parking shortage appears in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The article looks at recent increases in federal funding for the expansion of parking spaces and a growing awareness that the lack of adequate safe places for truck drivers to take their required breaks compromises the safety of all motorists. It adds:
- “The movement to address the parking shortage mirrors recent U.S. Department of Transportation efforts to require several long-sought safety measures designed to reduce fatalities in crashes involving large trucks — those weighing more than 10,000 pounds. The measures being pushed include speed-limiting devices and automatic emergency braking systems.”
- Although preliminary federal data for the first half of 2023 “showed fatalities in large truck crashes dropping by 11%,” the rate of deaths “rose 48% from 2013 to 2022 — to 5,887 from 3,981, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.”
Lawmakers Recommend Rhode Island DOT Seek Approval To Install Roadside Solar Panels
After several months of study, a Rhode Island House study commission has endorsed the idea of installing solar panels along highway medians, ecoRI News reports. One of the commission’s recommendations is that RIDOT obtain FHWA approval of a policy that would allow the state to accept competitive proposals for the construction of panels along interstate highways. RIDOT has a preliminary list of potential installation sites totaling approximately 330 acres. Covering an entire area of that size with panels “could provide more than 100 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy.” The commission has also identified a potential obstacle to the installation proposal: delay in connecting the energy generating facilities to electric power grid. “Renewable energy projects in the New England region are regularly bottlenecked because the infrastructure of the electrical grid, administered by dozens of different utility companies nationwide, does not have the capacity to handle additional power generations,” according to ecoRI News.
