PA Turnpike Engineer Receives Professional Group's Top Annual Award
Alan Williamson, Jr., PE, Construction Engineering Manager-East for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), was named 2025 Engineer of the Year by Central Pennsylvania Engineers Week Council, an organization that celebrates the work of the engineering profession and encourages young people to consider careers in engineering.
According to a PTC news release, Mr. Williamson led teams that converted the tollway to all-electronic tolling earlier in this decade and are now engaged in introducing open-road tolling (ORT) across the entire PTC network. Last month, the first phase an ORT system transition was successfully completed on the turnpike east of Reading. PTC added, “In his current role since 2021, [Williamson] he leads a team that delivers more than 60% of PA Turnpike infrastructure investment, totaling over $400 million annually and more than $3.5 billion across 10 years covering 170 miles of the turnpike system.”
Williamson is the fourth PTC engineer to win the council’s annual Engineer of the Year award.

It’s Engineer’s Week in the US. The annual event marks the engineering profession’s global contributions and promotes interest in engineering careers. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) in partnership with the nonprofit group DiscoverE provide resources and ideas for celebrating the event.
The organizers put a special emphasis on stimulating young students and girls to consider exploring the profession. A recent DiscoverE blog post noted that the theme of this year’s event, “Design Your Future,” “is both a call to action and a celebration of the limitless possibilities in engineering. It invites us to dream boldly, innovate relentlessly, and create a future shaped by our collective ingenuity.”

President Javier Milei’s administration has begun to cut ties with state-run toll companies in order to privatize tolls in Argentina. “The federal government announced [on Friday, February 14] the beginning of the privatization process of the public company [Corredores Viales], which manages tolls on some of the country’s main highways,” H2FOZ reports. “Corredores Viales manages, among other important roads, National Route No. 12, in the provinces of Misiones and Corrientes. The highway connects Puerto Iguazú with the rest of Argentina, and is used for access to the border.”
LatinFinance (registration required) also covers this story, noting that the government has also pledged to eliminate rate subsidies for drivers.
An Indian State Considers Installing Breathalyzers At Toll Plazas
The Times of India reports that the Uttar Pradesh state government is considering several approaches to reduce the region’s traffic fatalities, going so far as to propose conducting breathalyzer tests at toll plazas. Transport commissioner B.N. Singh spoke at a public meeting about other measures, such as limiting the working hours of taxi drivers who are prone to exhaustion and encouraging people to promote safe driving on social media.
Already this year, the state government has launched a “no helmet, no fuel” campaign that requires two-wheel vehicle drivers and their often-helmetless passengers to wear safety helmets. The article notes that police have been called to intervene during disputes over the rule at fuel pumps.
The actions aim to address India’s steady increase in road fatalities over the past decade. India has 1 percent of the world’s vehicles but represents 11 percent of global road crash deaths.
