MTA Identifies Operating Cost Savings To Fulfill State Budget Commitments
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced in conjunction with the release of its 2024 preliminary operating budget that it has identified $427 million in operating efficiencies across all units, including Bridges and Tunnels, which oversees tolling operations. According to the news release, “Bridges and Tunnels reviewed staffing requirements, reducing vacancies.” Other savings will be achieved by reducing transit staff overtime costs and adopting efficiencies in Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad maintenance. MTA noted it has exceeded the commitment it made during this year’s state budget process to achieve $400 million in annual savings through operating efficiencies, and it is “ahead of schedule on identifying $500 million in savings annually beginning in 2025.” The news release also notes that subway and commuter railroad ridership continue to increase in accordance with McKinsey and Company projections, and bridge and tunnel traffic “continues to track at or above pre-pandemic levels.” Paid bus ridership, on the other hand, “is now trending below the low case scenario.”
