Analyst Advises Against Giving NJ Transit More Turnpike Revenue Subsidies

NJ.com reports, New Jersey governor Phil Murphy (D) and legislative leaders are opposed to  extending a corporate tax surcharge that has raised approximately one billion dollars a year for financially stressed NJ Transit since 2018. The surcharge’s December 31, 2023, sunset date has officials debating how to deal with looming budget shortfalls, predicted to exceed $900 million by FY 2025, that could lead to transit fare increases or service cuts. Murphy says “[a]ll options on NJ Transit are on the table,” and a funding solution is “a work in progress.” One possible solution is to extend annual payment of New Jersey Turnpike toll revenue subsidies to NJ Transit. However, an analyst for a progressive think tank “cautioned about hitting up the toll authority for more money,” commenting, “I don’t think we can dig deeper into the turnpike without affecting its mission.” The article discusses other potential funding solutions and notes that some political and thought leaders are still pushing for extension of the corporate tax surcharge.

Long Island Toll Bridge's Conversion To AET Scheduled

The Atlantic Beach Bridge’s new hybrid E-ZPass toll system is scheduled to be activated sometime this month, according to LIHerald.com. The bridge operator, the Nassau County (NY) Bridge Authority (NCBA), engaged TRMI Systems Integration in February to install collection equipment. Through an agreement with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, NCBA will use the E-ZPass New York Customer Service Center to process transactions and provide customer services. The system conversion has public support, but a related toll structure change that officials started to phase-in last January has aroused controversy. The NCBA board determined that toll rates set in 2007 should be increased to fund $22.6 million in needed maintenance work. More information about the toll system change may become available when the NCBA board meets on December 20.
