Lawmakers Urge USDOT To Intervene On V2X Deployment Issues
Reuters reports, the leaders of the US House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee recently urged the Biden administration to take an active role in resolving problems with the implementation of cellular V2X technologies designed to enhance highway safety. In a December 15 letter to USDOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Representatives Peter DeFazio (D-OR 4) and Sam Graves (R-MO 6) criticized the 2020 Federal Communications Commission decision to to reallocate much of the spectrum that had been reserved for V2X. “Transportation stakeholders have highlighted the current challenges to V2X deployment, including regulatory uncertainty and a failure to quickly approve waivers for Cellular vehicle-to-everything,” they stated. “Given the regulatory uncertainty caused by the FCC’s recent actions . . . , [USDOT] must play a strong leadership role to support the deployment of V2X technologies.”

Last week’s Category 4 atmospheric river created an “eerie sound track” on the Golden Gate Bridge, CBS News Bay Area reports. High winds passing through the slats of the bridge’s new handrail generate a humming or whistling sound, which has been “a source of annoyance for San Francisco residents ever since a handrail retrofit, designed to make the span more aerodynamic on gusty days, was put into place.”
A 2021 Golden Gate Bridge District news release has detailed information about the sound problem, as well as the testing and an analysis of an engineering solution approved by the bridge board.
