FDOT Data Shows I-4 Express Lanes Are Speeding Travel For All Motorists
WESH reports, the I-4 express lanes Florida DOT opened last February in Orlando are improving travel for all users of the interstate, according to department engineer Jeremy Dilmore. “We’re seeing about a 25 percent reduction in travel times for the people in the general use lanes, so we’re seeing it improving the trips for everyone.” Volume is also steadily increasing. “We’re seeing about 28,000 vehicles per day are using the express lanes, and we’re seeing a growth of about 50 vehicles per week of new users,” Dilmore says. The fixed, distance-based toll rates FDOT adopted for the facility’s opening remain in effect, but a transition to dynamic pricing will occur sometime in the first half of 2023, according to Dilmore.

Tulsa World reports on the death, at age 77, of engineer Gary Ridley, who, over his long career in transportation, served as executive director of Oklahoma DOT and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA), and as Oklahoma’s secretary of transportation. Ridley retired from the ODOT and OTA positions in 2013, but remained in Governor Mary Fallin’s cabinet as transportation secretary until 2017. A number of federal and state officials issued statements of condolences, including US Senator Jim Inhofe (R), who said Ridley, a good friend, “served his state and his nation faithfully, always putting others before himself. So many of the Oklahoma transportation victories we secured over the years are due to Gary’s hard work and deep understanding of how to make roads and bridges safer.”
KOKH is one of the several other state media outlets reporting on reaction to Mr. Ridley’s death.

WESA reports, Pittsburgh’s new Fern Hollow Bridge opened to traffic yesterday less than a year after the collapse of its notorious predecessor. PennDOT, city engineers and contractors utilized emergency declarations, federal infrastructure funding and “procedures that allowed them to bypass a traditional, years-long [process of design, permitting and bidding]” to condense the time for building the 447-foot replacement span. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is still investigating the reason for the bridge’s failure. Also yesterday, Pittsburgh released a comprehensive assessment of 147 city-owned bridges prepared for it by WSP. “The report will inform the work of a new city bridge-management division next year.”
“New Civil Engineer” recently published an in-depth article on the funding, design and construction strategies that enabled PennDOT to rebuild the key Forbes Avenue bridge in just 10 months. Cheryl Moon-Sirianni, the executive who led the project team, said collaboration and supply chain focus contributed greatly to the successful outcome.
