Philippine Senate Committee Wants ETC System Fixed Before Future Rate Hikes

BusinessWorld reports, a Philippine Senate committee today urged the Toll Regulatory Board to postpone future North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) toll rate increases until Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) resolves problems with its RFID-based electronic toll collection system. “These services need to be improved before increases are made,” commented one senator. Another committee member stated, “The regulator should protect us all, but if they allow the rate to increase without looking at the service, what is the use of the regulator?” MPTC announced in April that it plans to spend approximately PHP 10 billion (USD 172.8 million) to deploy barrierless and cashless collection systems.

In April, lawmakers called for an inquiry into the operations and maintenance of the NLEX RFID system after motorists complained of glitches that delayed  traffic during the busy Holy Week holiday season.
