Fiber Optic Backbone For Indiana Toll Road ITS Network Is Complete
The Indiana Toll Road Concession Company (ITRCC) and eX² Technology, LLC, announced the completion of a fiber optic communications system and intelligent transportation system (ITS) expansion along the entire Indiana Toll Road. The $34 million conduit and cable installation serves a network of safety and messaging devices that will include, by this November, a truck-parking information management system. According to the companies’ news release, “In 2020 alone, ITRCC’s ITS resulted in a 79% decrease in secondary crashes while providing advanced information to travelers regarding upcoming roadway conditions.” The new network includes “additional conduit and fiber optic cable capacity to serve as a backbone for future community broadband expansion initiatives in Northern Indiana and beyond. eX² Technology, ITRCC’s exclusive commercialization partner, is currently marketing the conduit and dark fiber on a competitively neutral lease basis.”

Portland Press Herald reports, “A hearing [last night] on a proposal to increase tolls on the Maine Turnpike this fall to compensate for revenue losses tied to the pandemic drew a sparse crowd, both digitally and at [the in-person venue].” Two people attended in person, 11 participated virtually, and only one person chose to comment. “The Maine Turnpike Authority Board is expected to ratify the toll increases at its Sept. 2 meeting, but still could make changes, such as modifying the proposed increase for EZ-Pass users, according to MTA spokesperson Erin Courtney.” A final public hearing will be held tonight in Lewiston.
Company and Agency Financial Issues And Reports Maine Maine Turnpike Authority Toll Rate ChangesFlorida DOT Looks For Private Sector Help To Increase Truck Parking Spaces
Miami Today reports on efforts by Florida DOT and Miami-Dade’s transportation planning agency to remedy a shortage of commercial truck parking space. The article notes, “The last study by the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization in 2010 and 2012 revealed there were only 293 truck parking spots in the county but there was demand for 12,000, which would require development of 1,100 acres. Those numbers have evolved over the years but the problem remains the same and the solutions are limited.” One approach taken by FDOT is to “incentiviz[e] the private sector [to develop facilities] by providing department-owned land and offering potential upfront capital investments to help the private sector make the finances work.”
