Wisconsin Flex Lane Wins Regional America’s Transportation Award
Wisconsin DOT’s first Flex Lane recently earned a regional America’s Transportation Award for operations excellence, WMTV reports. The Madison Beltline (US 12/US 18) feature, which opened in July 2022, utilizes the inside median shoulder to ease traffic congestion during peak traffic periods. Wisconsin DOT secretary Craig Thompson said travel times when the lane is open have decreased up to 45 percent, and crashes are down 20 percent from pre-pandemic levels. The national “Top 12” America’s Transportation Awards will be announced next month.

KOIN reports, I-84 near Biggs Junction, Oregon, reopened Monday morning after two big rigs were removed from where they had crashed into the Columbia River in two separate incidents Friday night and Saturday morning. The first truck careened off the highway after hitting a passenger vehicle that had been abandoned on the highway’s shoulder. The second truck plunged into the river at nearly the same spot after striking an unoccupied Oregon DOT vehicle stationed at the scene of the first collision. At the time, work crews were preparing to extract the first truck from the water. No one was injured in the crashes. Police reported that the driver of the second truck may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
