NY Thruway AET System Has Now Processed More Than One Billion Transactions
The New York Thruway Authority announced today that more than one billion transactions have been successfully processed since systemwide cashless tolling began in November 2020. “The one billion transactions account for more than 17.4 billion total miles traveled and have generated more than $2.1 billion in toll revenues.” More than 2,000 state-of the-art, gantry-mounted cameras are part of the all-electronic roadside collection system designed, installed and maintained by Kapsch TrafficCom. Conduent provides back-office services and customer support through the E-ZPass New York Service Center. The Thruway’s interim chief executive, Frank Hoare, commented that the agency “is committed to modernizing and investing in our system. Cashless tolling saves time for our motorists, is better for the environment and enhances safety at previously congested toll plazas. Reaching one billion successful transactions is an incredible milestone and it would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our employees day in and out.” The Thruway, which receives no dedicated tax dollars, obtains about 90 percent of its revenue from toll payers.

Southern Maryland Chronicle reports, St. Mary’s County Commissioner Eric Colvin said a United Bridge Partners unsolicited bid to replace the obsolete Thomas Johnson Bridge with a tolled span has no traction. Colvin’s takeaway from a meeting last week with Maryland DOT is, “The state is not planning to put a new bridge, let alone a toll bridge, in its place right now.” Colvin also recently released the results to date of a non-scientific online poll he’s conducting to gauge public opinion about a tolled replacement. More than 90 percent of respondents from three local counties opposed the idea, as did nearly 90 percent of respondents outside Maryland. The Thomas Johnson Bridge carries an average of 25,000 crossings per day, making it a vital link for the region.
TheBayNet.com also reports on the poll and Colvin’s meeting with Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld.

CarExpert reports, Kia Australia is developing a dealer-based fast-charging network for electric vehicles (EVs). Charging will be free for Kia owners and available for paid use by other car owners, although the details of charging speeds and pricing for the latter have not been finalized. CEO Damien Meredith said the program already underway in Canberra is working well. The initiative seeks to remove slow and problematic public charging as a barrier to entry for EV ownership.
